Not using a gua sha stone yet? It's time to start!

The gua sha stone is a skincare tool that is gaining increasing popularity among natural skincare enthusiasts. Used for centuries in Chinese tradition, gua sha is a massage technique that helps improve circulation, remove toxins, and sculpt facial features. Despite this, many people are afraid to use it, don't know how to do it, or are unsure if it works. Are you one of them? This article is just for you!

What is a gua sha stone and how does it work?

A gua sha stone is a small piece of stone, most often jade (at Danucera we use white jade!), rose quartz, aventurine, or opal. Its characteristic shape, usually resembling an arch or a curved plate, allows for precise movements in different directions on the face and body.

Gua sha works by massaging tissues, which stimulates the flow of lymph and blood in the skin. The movements of the stone, performed in a specific way, allow for detoxification of the body, reduction of puffiness, and improvement of skin elasticity. Regular use of this technique makes the skin firmer and facial contours more defined.

How does gua sha massage work on the face?

Reduction of puffiness and facial sculpting

Gua sha massage helps reduce swelling and puffiness, especially around the eyes and jawline. The massage improves circulation, which accelerates the removal of excess water and toxins. Thanks to regular treatments, the skin becomes smoother and its contours more defined. You may notice a more prominent jawline and cheekbones.

Lifting effect and improved skin elasticity

Gua sha massage not only improves blood circulation but also lymphatic circulation, which promotes skin oxygenation. This makes the skin more toned and elastic. It can even stimulate collagen production, which helps maintain good skin condition and fight wrinkles.

Skin detoxification

One of the most important effects of using a gua sha stone is improved lymphatic drainage. The massage helps remove toxins and excess fluids that can cause puffiness and affect skin health. Reducing accumulated toxins in the body makes the skin look healthier and its complexion more even.

Why is technique so important?

What prevents most people from using a gua sha stone is a lack of knowledge of the proper technique. In reality, however, it is simpler than you think. The most important thing is that the massage should be performed in a specific direction, consistent with the flow of lymph and blood. The movements of the gua sha stone should be upward and outward. This direction of action helps to naturally lift the skin, improve its tension, and support its regeneration. Avoid pressing on the skin, as this can lead to irritation. The best solution is, of course, to use the gua sha stone together with skincare products.

How to perform a gua sha massage at home – step by step

Step 1: Skin preparation

Before you start your gua sha massage, it's crucial to prepare your skin properly. The first step is to cleanse your face, for example, with Cerabalm balm, which effectively removes impurities and makeup residue. After cleansing, toning your skin with a product like D22 Tonic will help restore your skin's natural pH and prepare it for subsequent skincare steps.

Step 2: Apply oil or serum

For gua sha massage to be effective, apply a small amount of moisturizing product to your skin. It is recommended to use Cerabalm, which absorbs into the skin and provides adequate glide for the massage. It's worth applying a pea-sized amount of product to ensure comfort and avoid excessive friction of the stone against the skin. The massage will also help the valuable nutrients absorb even better.

Step 3: Gua sha massage

It's worth starting the gua sha massage from the décolleté, holding the flat side of the gua sha stone to your chest. Then, move the stone upwards to the jawline, performing smooth movements. The next stage is massaging the jawline. Starting from the center of the chin, move the gua sha stone along the jawline on the left side, and then on the right, up to the ears. Remember to make upward movements, especially around the eyebrow line, up to the hairline.

For massaging the cheekbones, use the ridged side of the gua sha stone. Perform smooth, outward movements from the side of the nose towards the hairline. The last step is massaging the eye area. Using the tip of the stone, make gentle circular movements along the eyebrow line and under the eyes, moving the stone from the inner corner of the eye upwards and downwards under the eye. Subtle, pumping movements are also useful, as they aid lymphatic drainage and help reduce puffiness.

Step 4: Repeat the movements

To achieve the full effects of the massage, each movement should be repeated 5-10 times. The entire massage should take approximately 10-15 minutes to achieve the best results. Remember to perform the massage gently, avoiding unnecessary pressure on the skin.

What effects will gua sha massage bring you?

The massage brings many benefits as it improves circulation and aids lymphatic drainage. As a result, puffiness is reduced and the overall condition of the skin improves. The face becomes more defined, as if sculpted. Gua sha massage can also optically highlight the eyes. Such results last even two to three days. Facial sculpting is not only a matter of care but also a moment of relaxation, time you can dedicate just to yourself. Try gua sha on your own skin – the effects might surprise you!
