Summer skincare tips to prevent breakouts and irritation

Sweat, sunscreen, seawater, and sun are elements that regularly accompany us in the summer and can affect our complexion, causing irritation and breakouts. However, it's hard to avoid the sun in summer – is there a way to prevent acne and related irritation? Skincare expert and aesthetician from Rescue Spa, Simone Butler, answers the most frequently asked questions about maintaining beautiful, blemish-free skin while enjoying all the charms of summer.

What causes summer breakouts?

There are many reasons why our skin is particularly prone to breakouts in summer. The main reason is sweat. Constant facial sweating leads to clogged pores and excess sebum, which is a major factor in acne and breakouts. Another significant reason, according to Butler, is "too much SPF." This can be confusing because we should be wearing sunscreen all the time, but in summer, when we apply it to our face multiple times a day, sunscreen residue that isn't properly washed off can cause skin sensitivity and potential breakouts.

What to do to protect your skin from breakouts?

Butler had one simple answer to this question: "Use Cerabalm." She explains that this facial cleansing balm is the best way to remove oil and impurities because it is oil-based.

"You have to use oil to remove oil" – it's the best product for cleansing the face of greasy sunscreen residues, sweat, and other impurities that can accumulate on the skin throughout the day.

What habits should be avoided?

Butler's colleague, Rescue Spa aesthetician Greta Ikonomi, couldn't resist adding her two cents when this question came up: "Pimple popping!" she exclaimed. "It leads to scarring, especially when we're in the sun." Butler agreed with her.

She also added some of her own suggestions: "Inadequate skin cleansing can lead to clogged pores and breakouts, but it's worth noting that cleansing balms act like a magnet for dirt and oils on the face, while protecting the natural good oils our skin needs."

Another habit to avoid, Ikonomi pointed out, is "washing your face in the shower with very hot water, which strips the skin's natural protective barrier that prevents bacteria and dirt from entering." She noted that washing your face with warm or lukewarm water prevents irritation and inflammation, as the water we use in the shower is often too hot for facial skin and can harm its condition.

What ingredients are recommended for acne-prone skin in summer?

What should we use to prevent breakouts? According to Butler, "AHAs and BHAs help keep pores clear and gently exfoliate the skin." She adds that other acids, such as salicylic and lactic acid, are also good choices. "Lactic acid is really gentle and soothes the skin, preventing breakouts. Glycolic acid is another great ingredient that effectively prevents breakouts and irritation."

One excellent product to consider is D22 exfoliating toner, which combines these powerful ingredients to help maintain clear and healthy skin.

Whether you spend the summer on the beach or in the office, climate changes have a significant impact on your skin, but don't worry – there are effective ways to prevent breakouts and irritation while taking care of your skin all year round!
